Business Travel and the Multisport Athlete

Alright, I'm back.  It seems like it has been a while...and it has.  Two weeks, to be exact, since my last post.  I have been traveling a lot lately and haven't been at a computer to really sit down and post.  Not only have I have been away from Reckless Abandon, I have also been away from training.

I have done a few runs here and there, but I haven't had the time to really dedicate to making myself better.  I've done just enough to maintain.  Which leads me to a question for you all, what do you do when life gets in the way and you are taken away from your routines?  I feel like I would be more apt to find the time to train if I had an actual event on the horizon, but what do you do when you don't?  I am opening this up to you all - give me some advice. Share your secrets and tips... Tell me what's what.

To get me motivated and focused, I'm thinking about an early in the year marathon - the ING Miami Marathon on January 30, 2011.  Have you done this race?  Any thoughts you can share?

And finally, what about your 2011 race calendar?  Have you already put together what you want to do next year?  Is your plan in place or are you still "recovering" from 2010?

Looking forward to hearing from you all!

  1. Welcome back. I run and cycle early in the morning, so it would take a lot for me to be able to say I can't get it in and not be lying. My first goal for next year is to run my first ultra, in May. Before and after is still nebulous.

  2. I am like Kovas and bang out my routine in the morning and no matter how hard I try Kovas is still up and usually done before me, but I know that when I'm done I am done for the day and it makes me feel great.

I have already established my 2011 calendar and that motivates me as well. I try to race once a month even if it is a 10k of 15k just to keep the blood pumping. I am a competitive person and while running 6.2 miles is not a big deal it always gets heigthened in a race.

I ran the ING Miami 1/2 Marathon 2 years ago and I have to say it was great. There is nothing like going over the bridges with water on both sides and the sun rising. Great event with music at every turn and lots of crowd support.

  3. 2011 Calendar highlights -

Feb - Surf City 1/2 Marathon
    June - Ironman 70.3 Hawaii
Aug - team member Hood to Coast relay, Oregon (hopefully)
+ the local OC and San Diego sprint/Olympic faves.

I go through spurts of traveling a lot and I never leave home without gym and running stuff. I'd say I've been lucky to keep things together ("together" defined as doing something daily) at about 80% while traveling...
